Fake News or Fact? European Students Explore the Power of Critical Thinking at Constantin Brâncuși University of Târgu Jiu

Târgu Jiu, Romania | 26 October 2026

How can we distinguish truth from misinformation in a world where information travels faster than ever? This is the central question bringing international students and academics together at Constantin Brâncuși University of Târgu Jiu, which officially launched the “Fake News and Social Impact” programme on 26 October 2026, under the ACE²-EU European University Alliance.

Taking place from 26 to 30 October 2026, the programme is organised as an Applied Blended Challenge (ABC), combining online learning activities with five days of face-to-face academic engagement, interactive workshops, and practical challenges.

Understanding Misinformation in the Digital Age

In today’s interconnected world, misinformation can spread rapidly, influencing public perceptions, social behaviour, and trust in information sources.

The “Fake News and Social Impact” programme addresses these challenges by encouraging participants to look beyond headlines, question assumptions, and critically evaluate the information they encounter.

Throughout the programme, students will explore the mechanisms behind fake news, the influence of social media algorithms, cognitive biases, emotional manipulation, and the role of digital platforms in shaping information credibility.

Through interdisciplinary discussions, practical exercises, and collaborative learning activities, participants will strengthen their critical thinking, media literacy, fact-checking, and analytical skills, gaining valuable tools to identify and counter misinformation.

Four Universities, One Shared European Mission

The programme brings together academic expertise from 9 European universities.

This international collaboration creates opportunities for students and academic staff to exchange perspectives, share experiences, and explore innovative approaches to addressing misinformation across different European contexts.

Beyond the Classroom: Building Responsible Digital Citizens

More than an academic programme, “Fake News and Social Impact” offers participants an opportunity to reflect on their responsibilities as digital citizens and the importance of ethical communication in contemporary society.

By combining theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, the course encourages students to become more informed, analytical, and responsible consumers and creators of digital content.

Participants who successfully complete the programme will receive 3 ECTS credits and a certificate of attendance.

ACE²-EU: Connecting Knowledge, People, and Perspectives

Hosted by Constantin Brâncuși University of Târgu Jiu, the programme reflects the commitment of the ACE²-EU European University Alliance to innovative education, interdisciplinary cooperation, and the development of skills that respond to contemporary societal challenges.

By bringing together academic communities from Romania, Spain, North Macedonia, and Portugal, the initiative strengthens international collaboration and contributes to building a more informed, connected, and resilient European society.

In an age of information overload, the ability to think critically is not just an academic skill, it is an essential competence for the future.
